520 |a One of the rarest Civil War items of Texas-New Mexico action, now reprinted with added Confederate reports. Eye-witness accounts of the , first clash in the far west between Union and Confederate forces! In July, 1861, Texas Confederates hit the Union outpost at Fort Filmore, 40 miles north of El Paso. The fort was surrendered after little resistance, and McKee, a young Union surgeon, privately published his bitter account. Quoted by every key writer on the Civil War in the far west, McKee's report has sold for $50.00 or more a copy when it could be found. This limited edition reprint contains McKee's full text and his plan of the old fort, plus his 1861 map of New Mexico and reports by Confederate and Union officers from "Official Records." McKee's full service record included. Details of the abandonment of Fort Filmore, the flight of the Union troops across the Organ Mountains, and their surrender in the desert. Full report of the engagement by Lieut. Col. John R. Baylor, commander of the Confederate forces from Texas. Complete reports from Maj. Isaac Lynde, fort commandant, to Col. E.R.S. Canby -- Book jacket.
