Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to develop and compare two independent Spanish translations of the Student Questionnaire (STQ) of the BASC, namely the Puerto Rican Student Questionnaire (PRSTQ) and the Spanish Student Questionnaire (SSTQ). The PRSTQ was developed with the specific objective of developing a psychometrically sound and culturally relevant behavioral and assessment tool for its use with Puerto Rican children in Puerto Rico. The SSTQ was translated into standard Spanish using the back-translation technique. The PRSTQ and the SSTQ were compared at the item and subscale levels. A total of 592 Puerto Rican adolescents answered the PRSTQ and 611 the SSTQ. In addition, the PRSTQ and SSTQ were administered to a sample of juvenile offenders in a state juvenile facility in Puerto Rico. The results indicate that 73 and 145 of the 276 items had significantly different means. MANOVA indicated overall significant differences between the two forms subscale means (p<.001). Nevertheless, the effect sizes computed for significantly different subscales were relatively small. For the juvenile offender sample, moderate to large effect sizes were found for the Stress, Psychoticism, and Somatization subscales. In addition, these three subscale means were higher for the PRSTQ than for the SSTQ. When comparing the nonclinical and clinical samples on the PRSTQ, moderate to large effect sizes were found for the Depression, Locus of Control, and Self Esteem subscales. Specifically, the juvenile offenders showed more depressive symptoms and appear to have a lower self-esteem and an external locus of control. A review of the item content suggests that differences between items means are not only due to an effort to develop more culturally relevant items. There appear to be several variables explaining these differences including the measurement of unidentical constructs and the measurement of different severity levels. Implications for test development in Puerto Rico are discussed.
