Summary: | Part of a series of 10 videos (25 programs) on music for young people, presented by Leonard Bernstein. In "Berlioz takes a trip" (52 min.), Bernstein presents a lecture on Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique with a performance of excerpts from it. In "Two ballet birds" (52 min.) Bernstein refutes the contention of those who claim that ballet music is meaningless without the ballet to which it is pegged. Excerpts from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and The firebird by Stravinsky. In "Fidelio, a celebration of life" (52 min.) Bernstein describes the action and analyzes the philosophy of Beethoven's Fidelio. He conducts the orchestra, individuals and sections, in fragments and larger segments, with solos, duets, trios, and quartets of vocalists to give a synopsis of the opera. |
