|a In What is Impressionism? the idea is presented that the concert pieces of Debussy and Ravel, like the dreamy paintings of Monet, Degas and Renoir, draw on the French notion that suggestion can be more powerful than realism. Debussy's La mer and excerpts from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé are performed. In The Latin American spirit, the combination of Indian, African, Spanish, and Portuguese folk themes with complex rhythms and colorful instrumentation to yield the vivid sound of Central and South American music is illustrated. Works by Fernández, Villa-Lobos, Revueltas, Bernstein, and Copland are included. In A Toast to Vienna in 3/4 time, selections from Johann Strauss, Mozart, Beethoven, Richard Strauss, and Mahler are presented to illustrate the waltz and other uses of 3/4 time.
