The social doctrines of the Saint Simonians greatly affected the thinking of Pierre Leroux and, through Leroux, the artistry of George Sand. Under the influence of these doctrines, transmitted by Sand's novels, Whitman found a way to reconcile the roles of poet and humanitarian philosopher.
