520 |a Edward P. Shafranske uses a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy that incorporates clients' religious beliefs and spirituality into resolving conflicts. He emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic alliance and helps clients work through past experiences that have limited their ability to be authentic and make changes that can help them enjoy life more fully. Shafranske works with a 26-year-old female client who trouble expressing herself and standing up for her religious beliefs and the lack of passion she feels among the church staff and volunteers. Shafranske helps her trace her fear of speaking up back to her interactions with her father after her parents divorced, as her father would not let her express her emotions freely. They also discuss how her reticence in the church setting does not reflect her passion and religious beliefs. They discuss how facing and understanding her fears can help her express herself more freely and authentically.
