520 |a Edward P. Shafranske uses a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy that incorporates clients' religious beliefs and spirituality into resolving conflicts. He emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic alliance and helps clients work through past experiences that have limited their ability to be authentic and make changes that can help them enjoy life more fully. Shafranske works with a female client who is a professor in a southeastern university in which students are from evangelical backgrounds. Her Roman Catholic roots and feminist beliefs conflict with her students and this dissonance has led to her struggle around differences between her beliefs and those around her. Shafranske helps her to explore her feelings around this conflict so that she recognizes its impact on her well-being so that she feels less alone in her new surroundings.
