| Item Description: | "Sunday - March 12, 3:00 - 7:00, $ 5.00"--Pasted label. March 12 falls on a Sunday in both 1972 and 1978. Part of the leather bar circuit, Griff's was located on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and held its rowdy beer busts on Sundays. The first leatherman's wedding took place at Griff's in 1976 and was covered in Larry Townsand's Leatherman's Handbook and in Drummer Magazine, a magazine targeted at the gay male leather subculture. The beer bust was sponsored by the California Boots & Breeches Corps, a club for men interested in men in uniform formed in 1968. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy contains a second reproduction copy used for exhibit. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture. |
