Description
Summary:"Named after the historic 1960's Civil Rights Movement's march on Washington, this second march on Washington, 11 October 1987, represented the gay rights movement's continuing push for visibility and fight against discrimination. (The first march was October 14, 1979). This large political rally was inspired by the spread of AIDS and the blind eyed response to this crisis by the Ronald Reagan administration during the 1980's. The crowd was estimated to number over 200,000 and was led by Cesar Chavez (farm union president) and Eleanor Smeal (NOW president), featured the Cleve Jones' NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, and many prominent actors, politicians, and activists such as two gay members of Congress, Representatives Gerry E. Studds and Barney Frank, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jesse Jackson.
