Description
Summary:Four 1/4 inch evenly spaced circular defects were created bilaterally in the lateral femoral diaphysis of 12 clinically normal adult dogs. These defects were left unfilled, or were filled with one of the following, chosen at random: (1) plaster of Paris, (2) mixture plaster of Paris and cancellous bone, (3) cancellous bone. The rate and quality of bone healing were evaluated radiographically and histologically at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks postoperative. An estimated 90% of the plaster of Paris was absorbed by 2 weeks postoperative. Histologically there was no inflammatory reaction to the plaster of Paris. No differences were determined in the rate of bone healing between cancellous bone, plaster of Paris, and a mixture of plaster of Paris and cancellous bone. All of these implants were superior to the control defect in both rate and quality of bone healing.
