520 |a Michael Laird Rare Books description: Early 20th-century green half morocco over decorated paper boards, top edges gilt, original marbled publisher's wrappers bound in. A nice copy. Very good antiquarian condition. Early American children's literature concerning the despicable act of pet neglect. A tale of a young child's hard lesson about caring for a goldfinch, which eventually dies because of the child's neglect, specifically "forgetting" to provide the bird with water and food. The lesson, Responsibility before play, is too obvious; more interesting are the implications that keeping a pet, and neglecting it, are shameful and merit punishment by the offender as early as 1808. Curiously illustrated with three engravings.
